I began building
Spirit Vessels shortly after the birth of my second son. During
my wifes pregnancy, I had been preoccupied with the ideas
of duality and harmony in anticipation of the arrival of the new
member of the family. The concept behind the Spirit Vessels derives
in part from my interest in the function of music in ritual, and
the study of comparative religions, particularly pre-industrial,
non-western "nature" based animist religions.

Common
to many animistic cultures is the belief that all material objects,
animate or inanimate, are imbued with their own unique spirits.
For example, the tradition of the folk masks of present day Central
America dates back to pre-Colombian cultures who believed similar
masks contained the spirits of the deities they worshipped. In Bali
it is believed when the Barong dancer dons the sacred mask of the
Barong, he becomes the Barong. The spirit of the mask enters the
body of the dancer; he is the Barong. Many parts of the countryside
of Thailand are dotted with exquisitely carved and decorated miniature
bird houses referred to as "spirit houses."
The
human act of making music possibly began as an effort to imitate
the sacred sounds of the gods [Nature]. In this way, music has always
been connected to sacred time, either for personal self-expression,
or in more formally structured ensemble music, and in religious
ceremonial music. It is my desire that my Spirit Vessels evoke a
sense of sacred space and sacred time. As objects of contemplation,
and as musical instruments, the Spirit Vessels are intended to be
reminders of the need for balance and harmony in our lives.
All
